Unveiling Workplace Safety: The Hidden Observer

Do you know what happens when the supervisor leaves the floor? Most the time rules are followed, but occasionally corners will be cut. How do you discover these issues if you are not around?

Enter in our Director of Workplace Safety, Josh Davis. At the request of a partner company Josh goes incognito as an outside contractor to observe the good, the bad, and the shocking. After an initial meeting to hear their concerns, Josh enters the floor to record his observations and report back to leadership.

Recently, Josh embarked on undercover missions in three different companies to unveil employee conduct in the absence of direct supervision. Posing as a fire extinguisher inspector, he actually will check those while he is there, he discreetly wanders the floor making notes. Some of the most shocking behaviors observed were the lack of personal protective equipment (PPE) and an employee being lifted on the forks of a forklift. Once his mission is complete Josh sits down with leadership to discuss his findings. He follows up with a written report of his findings, citing the appropriate OSHA regulations, and follow-up recommendations.

Not all these behaviors were made as bad decisions, as Josh learned talking to employees and supervisors. Many instances stemmed from a lack of familiarity with regulations and compliance requirements. This is where UMA can step in and help out. As part of our safety and risk mitigation program we offer OSHA 30 and 10 hour training, forklift training/certification, free monthly safety training, and consultation to help create proper documentation and safety programs. As a result of this program two companies have secured forklift training and certification for their employees.
